Lessons Learned from Ma.gnolia Story

start-ups social networking

Ma.gnolia was built with the Ruby on Rails framework four years ago when cloud computing services weren't offered. Moreover, Ma.gnolia is funded, developed and maintained by just one man. That fact alone is astounding because not too many people can create and manage a social networking site by themselves (although I am aware of some geeks who built social networking sites for others but didn't get any richer out of doing it.) He was just about to build a business model out of it but in the past few days, things just didn't turn out well for him. Although I am not a ma.gnolia user (I use digg and del.icio.us), I express my sympathies because in the past I had this illusion of creating a social networking site for young people wherein the app is both a publishing tool and a place for interacting with others. I was not entirely interested in adopting or replicating features of existing social networking sites because personally, I see no need for those features.

Free Ubuntu Ebook

That book may still be useful on understanding Linux but only a few chapters are relevant. Things have gotten easier in Linux with so many distributions released.

Drupal Turns 8 and Rails 3 is Coming!

drupal rails development

It's interesting to note that Drupal 1.0.0 was released eight years ago. I just started using Drupal about 3 years ago when I was searching for an easier way to create a community website for music aficionados. I just needed some sophisticated user profile manager actually and I found Drupal a really cool tool to start with even if it was seemingly archaic compared to Wordpress because of the lack of an auto-installer during that time. Well, after 3 years of working on several Drupal projects, I could tell that it has really evolved to be the developer's CMS. Thanks to the community of developers who have relentlessly devoted their time to improve and help improve both the core and the contributions available at drupal.org.
